Br David Steindl-Rast

Charles appetite for modern contemplative writers expands after his return from Winnipeg back to his hermitage. In the following letter in 1985 he seeks a copy of “A Listening Heart” from another modern contemplative who was centred in the East West dialogue, Br David Steindl-Rast.

David Steindl-Rast is a Benedictine monk and scholar who has written extensively about contemplative spirituality and gratitude. The following is a summary of his contemplative teachings collected from his writings including his book mentioned above, A Listening Heart:

  1. Gratitude is the key to a fulfilled life: According to Steindl-Rast, gratitude is the foundation of happiness and fulfillment in life. By cultivating gratitude, we can develop a deeper appreciation for the world around us and find joy in even the simplest moments.
  2. Embrace impermanence: Steindl-Rast encourages us to embrace the transitory nature of life and to recognize that all things, including our experiences and relationships, are impermanent. By accepting impermanence, we can let go of attachment and find greater peace.
  3. Live in the present moment: To fully appreciate life, Steindl-Rast teaches the importance of living in the present moment. By focusing on the here and now, we can cultivate a deeper sense of awareness and find greater meaning in our experiences.
  4. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness is a key component of contemplative practice, and Steindl-Rast encourages us to cultivate mindfulness in all aspects of our lives. By paying attention to our thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations, we can develop greater clarity and insight.
  5. Embrace uncertainty: Life is full of uncertainty, and Steindl-Rast teaches that we must learn to embrace the unknown. By accepting uncertainty and remaining open to new possibilities, we can find greater freedom and creativity.
  6. Find joy in simple pleasures: Happiness is often found in the simplest of things, and Steindl-Rast teaches us to find joy in everyday experiences. By appreciating the beauty of nature, spending time with loved ones, and engaging in hobbies and interests, we can find happiness in the present moment.
  7. Cultivate compassion: Steindl-Rast believes that compassion is a key component of contemplative practice. By cultivating compassion for ourselves and others, we can develop greater empathy, kindness, and understanding.
  8. Practice forgiveness: Forgiveness is an essential aspect of personal growth, and Steindl-Rast teaches the importance of forgiving ourselves and others. By letting go of grudges and resentments, we can find greater peace and healing.
  9. Recognize the interconnectedness of all things: According to Steindl-Rast, everything in the universe is interconnected, and we are all part of a larger whole. By recognizing this interconnectedness, we can develop a greater sense of unity and belonging.
  10. Live with intention: Finally, Steindl-Rast encourages us to live with intention and purpose. By setting goals and working toward them with mindfulness and gratitude, we can live a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
