East-West Dialogue

Several conversations between Charles and Bede Griffiths, Pascaline Coff and Thomas Keating came about because of a Oct 15th, 1989 letter released under Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and approved by Pope John Paul ll. This letter was perceived by much of the press as resistance to eastern meditation practices. The following includes the original letter, press coverage by the Washington Post and the letters that were exchanged among some of Charles’ contemplative community in formulating a response. It was Bede’s response to Cardinal Ratzinger which was finally published.
