So much of the exchange between people with differing views has become combative. Charles set a tone based on existing agreements, regulations and laws as well as sound science and outcomes that were of benefit to the public at large and the natural world. The exchanges over time were always respectful. Not seeing the other as an enemy but as a partner with whom to share viewpoints, explore interests and seek mutual solutions. The strategy was one of seeking and creating a dialogue which would allow both parties to step into one another shoes and to see the same forests and watersheds through another’s eyes. This form of lobbying was grounded in a contemplative spirit which opens the door to a reciprocal constructive response rather than a defensive response.
