Charles sought out government commissioned engineering reports and studies on estuaries and watersheds and as a representative of groups such as the Oyster River Enhancement Society also commissioned them. When reports were being held up by various ministries, Charles would lobby government by writing letters and publishing these letters in local newspapers, until they were released. Once in hand their science would be used in further letter writing to assess options or implement recommendations. Not unlike the “evidenced based” mantra we hear in the medical profession, following the sound science of data collection, analysis and using the latest mitigating strategies became a practical and effective approach in improving the health of our local rivers and forests.

The influence of Charles’ contemplative practice is evident in the lack of disparagement or aggressiveness towards others that is often seen when differences in perspective arise with environmental issues. Instead the approach Charles shared through his actions was one of being increasingly respectful, quietly listening, seeking an understanding the others point of view and expressing a corresponding willingness to accommodate the other’s perspective.
