The Oyster River – An Evaluation of Watershed Sensitivity

Charles was determined to bring science rather than opinion and emotion to each one of his lobbying efforts. This approach was a main pillar of his lobbying strategy which fostered the immediate respect of the recipients of his many letters to government and industry leaders. His scientific understanding of how people disparage others when differences in values arise, how the natural environment becomes disparaged and how one might mitigate and restore nature were foundation blocks of his successful approach in bringing about positive changes. He had a good sense that science used in mitigation and restoration was not only about collecting the right data by using the expertise of qualified scientists, but also accepting and adapting to a string of failed solutions until the right solution was found. His well crafted approach is one which is based on working together with all interest groups, accepting significant differences among the various parties and jointly seeking solutions without judging others as good or bad. For Charles, resolving environment issues meant never allowing them to turn into adversarial issues. This was a product of his equanimous and contemplative approach to life. A view which reflected a deeply held sentiment that our the collective hope for humanity and the natural world was based on the need that we move into the future as a single sacred community.
